The World MasterCard Toronto Fashion Week has come and gone for another season. The 2015 Fall and Winter collections were shown at David Pecaut Square in the bustling entertainment district of downtown Toronto. Featuring 30 of Canada’s top fashion designers, the Canadian Collections showed to a packed house each night from March 23rd to 27th. Along with runway shows, there were also some fantastic after parties including the much talked about Grey Goose after-party. Being a title sponsor for the week, Grey Goose launched exclusive cocktails inspired by Canadian talent.
It wouldn’t be fashion week without a little drama. There was a protester who managed to walk the entire runway during a show before being escorted out of the venue by security, a website unveiled a top ten fashion blogger list that was met with criticism and call outs by many in the comments section. Also, Vawk designer Sunny Fong met with some criticism for his collaboration with Subway, presenting 4 outfits at the start of his 25 piece collection. The designer responded, telling The Toronto Star that without the support of the sandwich chain, “I wasn’t sure I was even going to do a show this season,” There was also the change in layout at the fashion week tents. Apparently, not many people like change and the entrance layout of the tents was usually frantic chaos with a crowded mix of line ups, line butt-ins and guests entering and exiting the main tent.
Change aside, the sponsors had guests staying entertained in between shows. Title sponsor MasterCard brought back their beloved #PricelessSurprises vending machine to the venue, giving guests a chance to win a selection of prizes. Krups had a busy booth, serving up espresso at an impressive rate.
There were also some very impressive collections from this season’s showing. We’ve been following the work of Hayley Elsaesser and love the use of prints and bold colour combinations that seem to come naturally for her. We liked the length of the tops from label 3.PARADIS and the asymmetrical lengths in the stunning Sid Neigum collection. Vawk, despite any controversy, presented a great collection that featured some stunning full-length pieces. The label Narces hit a high note for us this season with some spectacular dresses.
Not everything coming down the runway measures up. Below are some of the 2015 not-so-good moments.
