We were so excited when we received an invitation to stay at Villas Flamingos on Holbox Island in Mexico near Cancun.
This luxury hotel, one of only 35 designated ‘Boutique Hotels’ in all of Mexico, is a secluded vacation spot that is pure paradise.
It almost pains us to write about Villas Flamingos, it feels as though we are exposing the secret location to one of the most enchanting places. Villas Flamingos is situated on a beautiful landscape with over 200 meters of beach – the longest on the island.
The only way to get to Holbox Island is by water or air, travelling by a ferry or small aircraft. With strict environmental protocols in place for Holbox, local wildlife has flourished on the island.
With their natural habitats protected and steps taken to preserve them by Villas Flamingos, the wildlife has been able to co-exist with locals and hotel guests on the island in an amazing way.
Villas Famingos is a resort and should not be considered an all-inclusive ‘party’ destination. While the resort itself does not have a dedicated club or dance hall, certain special arrangements can be made with the resort. This would have to be arranged before your stay on the island.
Villas Flamingos is truly about relaxation, exploration and amercing yourself with nature.
As soon as we set eyes on the three-storey villa we knew this was going to be different than our other hotel experiences.
When we arrived to Villas Flamingos, we walked though an entrance through a wall of lush green plants and colourful flowers. The first glance onto the property, a stretch of private beach dotted by thatched-roof villas, you feel automatically transported to another world.
Villas Flamingos features private bungalows, each with their own unique feature, views and characteristics. Some villas feature private indoor pools or Jacuzzi.
Our villa was furnished with plush linens and natural decor accents of wood. The second and third floor featured one of the most spectacular views!
The Jacuzzi was on it’s own floor. A thatched roof, which must have been 17ft high, blended the view of tree tops on one side and ocean on the other. Pure tranquility.
Other features of our villa was a private outdoor shower space and a very large outdoor terrace. The bed was very comfortable, like extremely comfortable, and all the linens in the villa were clean. (We point this out because some reading this may be nervous about booking a vacation on a small island, but Villas Flamingos is wonderful)
Keep in mind there are no television sets at Villas Flamingos, however the resort itself features high-speed wifi that is fast enough for streaming music and videos or using features like Skype and FaceTime.
Villas Flamingos offers a a unique blend of modern and traditional cuisine with an emphasis on fresh and local ingredients. If you enjoy seafood then Villas Flamingos is a must!
The menu offers a range of salads, seafood and meat, lobster and delicious vegetarian dishes. The portions are generous, well priced and the ingredients taste very fresh.
Guests can enjoy Saturday outdoor barbeques or the civiche buffet each Wednesday; a day on which local fishermen select the freshest seafood and/or fish so that our chef can create his own interpretation of this famous island dish.
This type of food experience is on par with Villas Flamingos commitment to caring for the island’s delicate environment, and devotion to providing fresh food that is free of artificial ingredients.
The chef creates some truly delicious signature dishes and the wait staff are friendly and attentive. The entire hotel staff was an absolute pleasure.
