New Movie ‘IRIS’ Shows the Amazing Fashionistas Life

We recently posted on the new, top 3 fashion documentaries to watch and we recently got the opportunity to watch the documentary Iris. The movie chronicles the life of fashionista, business woman and New York City social staple Iris Apfel.

The movie follows the 93 year old Iris, known for her signature round framed glasses and her flamboyant fashion, as she talks about how she collected an impressive fashion collection, collected from all over the world, as well as decor and other unique items. As a cultural marker, the flamboyant and opinionated Iris has helped redecorate and restore design antiquities at the White House for nine presidents.

Iris’s fashion collection was even featured as an exhibit at the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. With all this focus on your fashion, one would think that Iris would have a big ego, but she is very down to earth and you can see that in the opening scene as she shops for costume jewelry and says “I get more kick out of this that cost $4 and change, then if my husband took me to Harry Winston.”

This continues throughout the movie as we see how Iris has traveled the world throughout her career as an interior decorator and added to her fashion collection as she went. Her love of fashion and unique sense of style is an extension of who Iris is and her personality really draws you into the movie. One of our favourite parts of the film is seen while going through a collection and Iris dishes out one of her helpful fashion tips like “I don’t have any rules, because I would be breaking them so… it’s a waste of time.”
