Since opening Klaxon Howl in 2005, Toronto-based owner and designer Matt Robinson has drawn inspiration from the archives of his legendary collection of vintage militaria, workwear and sportswear of the early to mid 20th century, with important pieces, books and films from this time period echoed in each design. The Klaxon Howl collection is thoughtfully produced by hand, locally and in small batches using construction techniques.
Robinson works with quality fabrics that lend themselves to each design. Though many are woven on looms from countries as far away as Scotland and Japan, each piece is cut and sewn with pride in Toronto. Robinson’s commitment to quality materials is matched by his devotion to Canadian-made products.
Most recently Robinson put his talents toward designing for a number of Toronto-based cultural projects, including the uniforms for the eagerly anticipated launch of the UP Express, a dedicated rail service from Union Station to Pearson Airport. He has also designed uniforms for two of chef Teo Paul’s establishments (Union and Cote de Boeuf), the uniforms for renowned chef Jamie Kennedy, and stage wear for Sebastian Grainger of the band Death From Above 1979. Robinson has also done private labels for the Hudson’s Bay Company, Ships Japan, Upstate Stock and Palmer Trading Company, and he is currently working on custom Chef coats for the Art Gallery of Ontario.
